Cedar Ridge, Grand Canyon NP
Located
approximately one mile below the South Rim along the Kaibab Trail,
this facility contains three Phoenix Composting Systems in an
insulated, ACQ pressure treated wood, daylight basement. Two
standard toilet rooms, one handicapped accessible toilet room, and a
storage room are located on the main floor. The photograph above
shows the uncovered roof exposing the photovoltaic and solar hot air
collectors built into the room framing. Once covered with
double-walled Lexan glazing, the photovoltaic panels become
virtually unnoticeable and thus resistant to vandals and thieves.
Rainwater from the roof
-- there is not much of it in this 8-inchs-of-rain-per-year climate
-- is channeled into a 300-gallon cistern in the
basement. Water from this cistern, pressurized by a small pump, is
connected to a hose in the toilet room, where it facilitates
cleaning. All interior walls are covered with fiberglass. The floor
is covered with a nonskid, texturized, monolithic urethane.
