Phoenix Application Profiles

State Park

Wild Horse Island, Flathead Lake, Montana. Hot, dry summers and long, cold winters put this solar powered and heated building to the test.
Cypress Island, Puget Sound. A rugged, heavily timbered, mountainous island that is managed to preserve its undeveloped character.

County Park

National Park

image Cedar Ridge, Grand Canyon National Park. One of the most spectacular sites in the park, and one of the driest.

Co-Housing Community

image Cobb Hill, Vermont. An intentional community. The Phoenix was selected as the development's composting toilet after a long and complex engineering review of composting toilet options.

Tropical Beaches

image Halape, Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii. Palms and the sea winds are the only other permanent occupants of this "beach" of hardened lava that contains some of the youngest land on Earth. Popular with hikers, Halape's old "facilities" were popular with no one.
image Kaloko-Honokohau, Hawaii. Located next to the Pacific on the Big Island's southwestern Kona coast, the flat terrain presented a special problem in design.

River Rafting & Kayaking

Indian Creek, along the Wild and Scenic Salmon River, central Idaho. Popular with with whitewater rafters.
image Deschutes River, central Oregon. Flowing north to the Columbia River through deep canyons in the basaltic plateau, the remote, sunblasted Deschutes attracts rafters and fishermen.
image American River, California Sierra, east of Auburn. Now camping and taking care of business are as much fun as rafting down the river. ACS installed three building along the American in the Fall of 2004.

West Vancouver Yacht Club , Canada

image Gambier Island, British Columbia, Canada. A favorite of sea kayakers, this elegant, solar powered, cedar building, designed and constructed by our partner in Canada, Synergy LTD, blends into the landscape.

Highway Rest Areas, Canada

image Wolf Education Center, Winchester, Idaho. A demonstration project, this building features a variety of green technologies.

Rock Climbing

Smith Rock State Park, Central Oregon. Rock climbers from all corners of America are drawn here by the high quality day climbing routes on the steep stones and cliffs that jut skyward from Oregon's central desert.

High Elevation Ski Hut

image Janet's Cabin, above 10,000 feet in the Colorado Rockies. There's plenty of oxygen for composting, and plenty of snow for skiing. As long as the composting vessel is kept warm, waste decomposes as rapidly as it does at sea level.

Farmers Market

Bayview Corner, Whidbey Island, Washington. Another project demonstrating green technologies.
