Cypress Island, Puget Sound, Washington

Just a few miles west of the busy Washington port of Anacortes, ruggedly timbered Cypress Island rises steeply out of the surrounding sea. The island, a state park that is essentially undeveloped, and which will stay that way, draws enough visitors to warrant two Phoenix composting toilet equipped public facility building.

The handicapped accessible buildings feature cultured rock on the exterior walls of the daylight basement, photovoltaic panels built into the roof, and wood siding painted to blend in with the natural surroundings.
